The story behind the name
The third stage of the 1909 Giro d’Italia was a 242 km long stage from Chieti to Napoli. Taking place on dusty and horrible roads, full of holes and nearly impossible to maneuver on, this stage showcased an Italy clearly divided in two parts.
Several riders withdrew from the race this day with broken bikes due to the terrible conditions of the roads.
However, it was not only the poor roads that provided drama. So did the race. At the front, Carlo Galetti was on a solo attack.
Riding well into the dusky evening, a completely exhausted Galetti approached the finishing line and the tifosi immediately surrounded him, trying to give him extra energy. Unfortunately for Galetti, the crowds ended up blocking his way, which caused Giovanni Rossignoli to pass his fellow countryman and take the stage win after more than nine hours in the saddle.
Rossignoli went on to finish third overall in the Giro that year but it all started in streets of Napoli.
Over 100 years have passed since then, but the story of Rossignolli’s win on the impossible roads still lives on. The Napoli 1909 jersey is dedication to this unforgettable moment.
